Watersheds in Mahoning County

Mill Creek Watershed:
47,000 acres in size, which includes parts of Youngstown, Canfield, Beaver, Boardman, and Austintown Twps, as well as Mill Creek Park and the Canfield Fairgrounds. Land uses include urban industrial, commercial, and residential in the northern areas, and rural residential/agricultural in the southern areas of the watershed. This is the commercial center of the County. The Mill Creek Watershed Action Plan was endorsed by the Ohio EPA in 2007.

Meander Creek Watershed:
50,000 acres in size, which includes Meander Reservoir as well as parts of Jackson, Milton, Austintown, Canfield, Goshen and Green Twps. Land use is mostly agricultural, with some residential and commercial. Meander Reservoir is the drinking water supply for Austintown and the City of Youngstown. AWARE is currently working on the Meander Creek Watershed Action Plan with the help of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Meander Water (MVSD), and other partners.

Yellow Creek Watershed:
23,000 acres in size, which includes Pine, Hamilton, Burgess and Evans Lakes, portions of Boardman, Beaver, Springfield, and Poland Twps, and the City of Struthers. Yellow Creek is the drinking water supply for Poland, Campbell and Struthers. AWARE is currently working on the Yellow Creek Watershed Action Plan with the help of Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and other partners.

Little Beaver Creek Watershed:
45,000 acres in size, which includes parts of Goshen, Green, Beaver, Springfield and Poland Twps. Land use is primarily agricultural. Some surface mining still occurs in Springfield Twp.

Upper Mahoning River Watershed:
66,000 acres in size, and includes Berlin Reservoir and Lake Milton which are major recreational areas managed by the Army Corps of Engineers as flood control along the Mahoning River.  Smith, Western Goshen, Berlin and Milton Twps are included in this watershed. Land use is primarily agricultural.


Lower Mahoning River Watershed:
40,000 acres in size, which includes McKelvey Lake and the Mahoning River as well as parts of Youngstown, Campbell, Lowellville, Struthers, Austintown, Coitsville, Poland, and 
Boardman Twps. Land use is mostly urbanized with a mix of industrial, commercial and residential.
